If reality could be wished or legislated away, there would be no poverty or misfortune anywhere in the world. According to Oxfam, the British charity, when Westerners cajoled the government of Bangladesh into outlawing child labor, the children by and large went into prostitution instead, or simply starved to death. UNICEF reports that a boycott of the Nepalese carpet industry forced five thousand desperate young girls into prostitution. We can assume the children thus liberated took little consolation in knowing that at least they weren’t working in factories anymore. Still less would they have cared about the good intentions that supposedly motivated the crusaders, who could not pencil in to their schedule of moral outrage the five minutes it would have taken to study the likely consequences of what they were demanding.
